  1. King of Sardinia from 1831. He showed liberal
  2. sympathies in early life, and after his
  3. accession introduced some reforms. On the
  4. outbreak of the 1848 revolution he granted a
  5. constitution and declared war on Austria. His
  6. troops were defeated at Custozza and Novara.
  7. In 1849 he abdicated in favour of his son
  8. Victor Emmanuel and retired to a monastery,
  9. where he died.
